We got a new calf for Christmas!

12/18/2016

I know it's been a little bit since writing, but Virginia our late bloomer has had her second calf!  She is turning into quite the baby maker.  We were a little concerned with her, but she's had her second calf this year.  From what it looks like it's another girl as well!!  So to date, this year, we have 10 new babies for the farm, that's pretty good with only having 9 birthing aged cows.  From what it looks like we will have another one on its way soon, seeing that we have some very wide looking cows.
We've also added some nubian nannies to the mix.  We've been waiting to get some goats and my sister had some that we took over.  They're a little antsy and slowly getting used to us, so we still have some time ahead of us to tame them enough to be able to milk them in the future.
From our family to yours, Merry Christmas and we hope you all have a Happy New Year!

We're Back....

Sorry it's taken so long to get back on track with the posts and the website.  We have been busy rebuilding the house, still in progress, and building up the farm.  We now have our cattle, our pigs (red wattle and one mixed breed female), and our chickens.  We will be adding goats, horses, and rabbits here soon once we are more established in the house where we can actually have extra time to work on animal housing.  Our sow Olivia gave birth for the first time this winter, poor girl.  We were able to build a birthing house for her, but she chose not to use it.  Unfortunately that caused us most of the litter.  For her first time, she birthed 12 little piglets, only two survived.  We learned our lesson and the next time she births, no matter the weather, we will have her under the barn.  With both of us not really knowing how she would behave with the litter we were weary of her taking care of the two surviving, but she has proven to be a very good mother.  Whenever it's raining or too cold for the piglets she puts them in the house so that they stay warm and dry.  They are both very stocky babies and we are debating on keeping the little female.  Along with the piglets, our chicken Sassparilla (Splash Cochin) was feeling broody and she brought 4 little chicks into the wintery cold world.  Three of the four survived, the one that didn't survive had split legs when born and I wasn't able to get it placed correctly.  Unfortunately, this winter, Sassparilla and another of our Cochin (Silver-Laced) were taken by an unknown animal from the chicken coop.  We are in the process of setting up traps to stop this animal (probably a raccoon).  We also have been greeted by some opossums eating our eggs and getting into the chicken food.  Needless to say, this winter has been a trial and error.  We are finally getting on track with how we want to live and the house is winding down to where we can live in and have the best time of our life.

Fall is coming...

Fall in Missouri is slowly approaching. The last couple of days have been humid and in the mid to high 80s.  I'm ready for this week coming up with the temps in the 70s!  Meany has given birth to a new baby on September 28th. This is first calf since about a year and a half, so we were very excited to get a glimpse of this little one. It looks exactly like her, it's amazing!
We have three steers that will be for sale here pretty soon and one heifer.
We have added some Red Wattle pigs to the farm and Charlotte, who's breed is unknown but she's just the sweetest thing and once she gets big enough will make some cute piglets with Wilbur our soon to be boar.
Our chickens, which we got the day old from Cackle Hatchery have thrived and are being crazy chickens. I can't believe the different personalities between the breeds.  We've added 12 Dominiques and 11 Cochin, which the Cochin will a majority of meat birds since we had to get a straight run and we received a majority roosters.
Sorry for the time between posts, soon there should be less time between the posts.  The house is in progress!

Thanks for reading!

About to venture into farming...

My husband is about to retire and we (as a family) are about to move up to Missouri.  We have had two births on the farm recently.  About a month ago from today and last week we had some new births.  It's looking like a heifer and a bull calf so far!!

We've also added three Red Wattle piglets to the farm.  I can't wait to hang out with these intelligent and loving animals.  We've also added a gelding to the mix.  He's going to be a great asset to the farm.

I know I can't wait until we're there plus my kids are going crazy with everything they get to do.  July 1st can't come fast enough!

Here is the first two calves for the year!  Welcome babies...these calves are from our new bull.  Oddly enough the white speckled calf was the first born out of the two.  Notice the stockiness of the newborn calf.  The second born, the more fawn colored, has some legs that never end!  Really excited to see the other babies from our pregnant mommas.

Thank you for checking out the blog today.  I hope you have a great day.

Not too much is happening, we're just getting ready for the move from Japan back to the states.  It's a bittersweet feeling.  Japan has been our home for almost 4 years and it's been a great experience but it's going to be nice to get back to the states where our family is.  Plus it will be nice to be able to read most of the everything we're ordering.  The Sakura (cherry blossoms) are blooming here in Japan and this is a part of the year that I will miss greatly.  They are a beautiful flowering tree that smells great!  Here are some pictures of the sakura around here.

Well we finally have a concrete idea of where we are going to be stationed next and it's in the states.  We will be able to actually handle our cows and start building our house on the land.  It looks like we will be stationed at Hurlburt Field.  From what I have heard it's a really nice base.  Why wouldn't it be?  It's right on the ocean!!!  I know this lady could use a good tan.  We will be a little ways away from Thayer but we won't be countries away.  Pretty excited about this new adventure.  Stay tuned for more on the farm

We are still currently stationed here in Japan, but my mother and mil just visited and returned back to the states.  From what I have heard fall is on its way to the farm.  I know here in Japan it started off with a roar with Typhoon Jelewat.  All the babies were born and are growing in abundance.  I will have to post some of the newer pictures of the calves.  From the last count we had all bulls minus one heifer.  All the bulls have been banded and we are just holding off until it's time to sell them.  If you are interested in purchasing the heifer we will add photos soon, just contact us.

Well i'm proud to say that we have a bustling five calves on the farm!!!  We are awaiting one more to grace us with their presence.  It's pretty exciting that all the moms are delivering with no problems.  I'll be posting some new pictures of the babies.  We have yet to see what the new calves are but can't wait to see them grow and flourish.  Most of all the calves will be for sale once they are old enough.  We will let you guys know about the sexes once we have been able to check them out.  Most of the bulls, unless told ahead of times we will turn into steers.

First Blog Post!

Here is our first blog post for the new website!  I'm so excited to finally get the website/blogspot up and running.  Like stated in the "getting to know you" section we are currently stationed at Yokota Airbase in Japan but have traveled back and forth a few times to spend some time on the farm.
Our cattle can withstand some pretty gnarly conditions and are thriving right now in the spring time season.  The new grass is popping up and our heifers and cows are giving birth to their offspring.  We have recently welcomed two new calves to the herd.  The newest of the heifers that we bought about a year ago have given birth.  We are awaiting the other four babies here anyday.  The offspring is from our late bull Big Boy.  He passed away a little less than a year ago.  When we were back in Missouri in February 2012 we purchased another bull and he is ready to take on the herd as main man.

There will be more pictures when we receive new pictures of the herd.  Until then, please email us with any questions.

My name is Shayna Poole and I have started this page and blog to show our life on the farm.  I married my husband on 2008 and have been living off the land with our heritage breed cattle.  We are currently stationed overseas at Yokota Airbase, Japan and we have friends helping us with ensuring the herd stays strong.  We have two beautifully crazy kids that we can't wait to share the farming lifestyle with.
